Money in the Scriptures
It surprises many to learn that there are over 2,000 verses in the Bible concerning money, wealth, and possessions. God understands that how we handle our finances deeply affects our spiritual lives.
The Burden of Debt
Proverbs 22:7 gives a stark warning: "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender." The Bible does not explicitly call debt a sin, but it consistently describes it as a burden that restricts our freedom to serve God fully. Modern consumer debt often stems from impatience and a desire for immediate gratification.
Contentment as Wealth
Hebrews 13:5 instructs us: "Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, 'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" True financial freedom begins not with a high income, but with contentment.
Stewardship and Generosity
We are not owners, but stewards (managers) of God's resources. The principle of the tithe and generosity (2 Corinthians 9:7) reminds us that giving breaks the hold of materialism on our hearts.
Practical Steps
- Create a Budget: Know where your money is going (Proverbs 27:23).
- Avoid Co-signing: The Bible strongly warns against taking on the debts of others (Proverbs 11:15).
- Save Diligently: Proverbs 21:20 praises the wise who save for the future.
